Island Productions is a Vancouver based independent theatre and film production company founded by Michael Germant and Mel Tuck. Celebrating six years of theatre since its inception in 2013, past theatrical productions include Bachelor Holiday by Academy Award winner Alan Ball, Seminar by award-winning Broadway playwright Theresa Rebeck, The Dreamer Examines His Pillow by Tony and Oscar winner John Patrick Shanley, Kathleen Tolan’s A Weekend Near Madison, Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie and Pulitzer Prize Finalist Rajiv Joseph’s Gruesome Playground Injuries. Film-wise, Island Productions’ short comedy Legally Speaking screened at the Cannes Film Festival, as well as in Berlin and Spain. The team was joined by Mariya Miloshevych who is producing Theresa Rebeck’s play The Understudy which will premiere in August 2019.
Mel Tuck - Director, Artistic Director, Writer
Mel is a highly regarded pioneer of Canadian theatre, a director of international reputation and an innovator in acting training technique and philosophy. In a career spanning over fifty years, he founded nine theatre companies and has directed over three hundred plays across Canada. He headed the drama department at Ryerson University for thirteen years and originated and ran the Gastown Actors Studio conservatory for twelve years. Mel holds a BFA from the University of Alberta and has been recognized in the form of three ACTRA and two Genie nominations. He is currently the co-founder, artistic director and resident director of the Vancouver based independent theatre and film production company Island Productions.
He has been gratified to watch his students win awards and gain exposure in the North American film industry, including Eric McCormack, Barry Pepper, Molly Parker, Martin Cummins, Jared Keeso, William MacDonald, Lynne Griffin, Roman Podhora, David James Elliott, Nia Vardalos, Ian Tracey, Nicholas Lea, John Pyper-Ferguson, John Cassini, Brent Stait, Ben Ratner, Mercedes de la Zerda and Max Lloyd-Jones.
Michael Germant - Actor, Writer, Producer
Michael was born in Moscow and raised in Montreal. He has a degree in language from Concordia University and has studied at Acting Studio Montreal, UBC, VFS, Michael Howard Studios and Austin-Tuck Studios. His short film Legally Speaking which he wrote, produced and starred in premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May and is currently on the festival circuit. He performed alongside his co-star Gina in John Patrick Shanley’s The Dreamer Examines His Pillow and Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie. Michael has appeared on screen in SyFy’s High Moon, Showcase’s Continuum, Warner Bros. Television’s Legends of Tomorrow and Arrow, and FOX's War for the Planet of the Apes.
Mariya Miloshevych - Producer, Director and Actor
Mariya is an Ukrainian up-and-coming filmmaker. This is her first time producing a play but she has produced and directed 5 short films in the past few years. Her short film “The Hallway” has won Best Short Film in Nice. “ Tangerine Crossandra” is was selected as a finalist at Roma Cinema Doc Festival. Her writing debut “Caligo” was a Semi-Finalist at Los Angeles Cine Fest Festival. She runs a local Vancouver production company called Ridley Cinematography.
